Core subjects follow a common course in first year and students are assessed for higher or ordinary level in Gaeilge, Mathematics and English from the start of second year onward.
Students will complete two Classroom Based Assessments (CBA’s) in each core subject, complete and Assessment Task (AT) after the 2nd CBA and sit a final examination in June of 3rd Year.
Core Subjects (Non-Examination)

Course Duration: 400 hours
Information: This area includes subjects such as Physical Education (PE), Social and Personal Health Education (SPHE), Civic, Social and Political Education (CSPE) and Guidance. The school will also offer other Learning Units as part of wellbeing provision.

In advance of starting first year, incoming students will be asked to rank the above option subjects from 1 to 10. Based on these rankings the subjects will be divided into four option blocks. Students will experience subject taster courses in each of the blocks in September and October. Prior to the October mid-term, students will be asked to select one subject from each block to keep on for the remainder of Junior Cycle.
In SMK, students preparing for their ‘New Junior Cycle’ will take a maximum of 9 subjects for examination and complete two short courses in PE and CSPE. Students will complete Classroom Based Assessments (CBA’s) at the end of second year and again early in 3rd year.
